Teaching Monday Night Blues

I have generally taught this rote. I start by playing the song. Then I play just RH in the I position having them watch my fingers on the keyboard. For those familiar with the blues scale, AFTER they have seen and can play the pattern I point out that it is just the blues scale going up.

Once they have the I position, for those who are far enough along, rather than teaching the IV and V by watching, I will have them transpose by counting half steps.

I use the words 'slide C' for measures 3, 8 and 12. After they learn the whole song, we write out the 12 bar blues pattern and I have them circle the measures that are 'slide C'
